Knowledge + Practice

Chan Vi's research interests include bicultural identities, colonial legacies, participatory methodologies, and the roles of chance and play in experimentation. Vi's academic interests run in tandem with a practical application of creative processes to support personal discoveries of the everyday folk, for, in the words often attributed to Anton Chekhov, "Knowledge is of no value unless you put it into practice."

Creative Experience

  • Monologue performance - Chorus of One (2025),  directed by Donnie Dang, producedby Otter Theatrics, performed at the Goethe Open Space at the Cultural Education Department of the German Consulate General in Shanghai.  
  • Devised, directed and produced a fringe show -Liminal (2024), performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
  • Directed erhu experiments (2023) with musician Qingyi Gong and dancer Jinglin Liao in Shanghai. 
  • Designed scenery - In The Human Nature (2022), choreographed by Matea Kiselichka at the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music.
  • Designed scenery - 我 Men (2022), directed by Tamires Lizandra Paixao, performed in Shanghai.
  • Directed experiments - Juncture (2010),  in London and Borth Beach, Wales,  with choreographer Mel Simpson, composer James Hesford, costume designer Angela Collmer, photographer Samin Valentine Ghiasi.
