Devised Theatre

Devised Theatre is a method of theatre-making in which a group of performers create an original performance from scratch. Rather than starting with a script, devised theatre often begins with a "departure point" (such as a theme, image or idea) and uses improvisation, physical movement and multimedia to generate material. The process results in highly experimental and deeply personal storytelling.

Core Characteristics:

  • Collaborative creation
  • Experimental nature
  • Non-linear development

Common Devising Techniques:

  • Object-based work

  • Movement

  • Tableaux/Image theatre

  • Soundscapes

  • Improvisation

  • Autobiographical storytelling

We will be running devised theatre workshops in London with a focus on exploring what it means to be British Chinese today. The workshops are open to all levels of performance experience, complete novices are also welcome. We endeavour to create a safe third space for British Chinese to use creative practices to delve into the complexities of navigating dual cultural identites together.

If you are interested in taking part or supporting the devised theatre workshops, please drop us a line.
